Mission

The 976-TUNA YOUTH FISHING PROGRAM seeks to provide children in Southern California with the opportunity to experience the wonders of saltwater sport fishing. Though an introduction to this sport, the program hopes to instill in children a sense of appreciation of the wonders of nature as encountered on the Pacific Ocean along the coast of Southern California. 

Who are we?

The 976-TUNA YOUTH FISHING PROGRAM is the community service program of 976-TUNA, America's original and most-respected saltwater fishing information hotline. Begun in 1993 by Philip Friedman, the founder and "voice" of 976-TUNA, the 976-TUNA YOUTH FISHING PROGRAM has grown into one of Southern California's most successful fishing programs. Thousands of children have had the opportunity to catch their first fish, take their first boat ride, and experience all the wonders and joys of a fishing trip on the beautiful Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California courtesy of the 976-TUNA YOUTH FISHING PROGRAM. 

Goals

1. To introduce children in Southern California, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to the healthy, affordable recreation experiences available to them though saltwater fishing.                                    

2. To cultivate in the participating children an increased appreciation of nature and greater understanding of the complex marine ecosystem found in the Pacific Ocean along Southern California.

3. To help the saltwater fishing industry of Southern California nurture the next generation of sport fishermen/women.

4. To provide 976-TUNA and its sport fishing industry collaborators with an effective vehicle for increasing public awareness of our programs and services while providing a valuable public service to the community in Southern California that sustains our commercial enterprises.

5. To help coordinate the variety of public service saltwater sport fishing programs offered by fishing clubs, sportsman organizations, yacht clubs, community service groups, and other organizations working with the children of Southern California.
